Review: Getting Played by Emma Chase

GP Cover.jpg
The Cover: I think the cover for Getting Played is very typical romance cover and it isn’t is my favorite but it is a nice cover.

Basics: Getting Played was released on October 8th, 2019 and is 241 pages. Genre wise Getting Played belongs to contemporary romance.

Description: Dean Walker is all about keeping life simple. He’s effortlessly talented and intelligent—spending his summers playing drums in the local band and the rest of the year teaching high school in the same Jersey town where he grew up. He likes his love-life simple too, enjoying the commitment-free hook-ups his good looks and sexy charm have always made oh-so easy. Then he meets Lainey Burrows. And his simple, easy life gets turned upside down.

One wild one-night stand was all it was ever supposed to be, so Lainey is shocked when she discovers that her sizzling summer fling is also her son’s new math teacher. But that’s nothing compared to the most unexpected twist of all—their hot hook-up left Lainey knocked-up, and now they’re about to become parents. Together. What ensues is an addictive, insatiable, sweet and tender romance that won’t be simple, but it will be more than worth the fight.  **A stand-alone, contemporary romance.**

Overall thoughts: It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a book by Emma Chase, so I was ecstatic to be given the opportunity to read Getting Played. The whole romance, accidental pregnancy genre when it comes to romance books isn’t my favorite thing to read about, but I was pleasantly surprised with this book.

When a one night stand turns into a bit of a Shakespearean drama, (the one night stand Lainey has with ends up being her son’s math teacher AND she finds out she’s pregnant with his child?!) Getting Played really picks up and doesn’t stop there. The twists are something I really enjoyed about this book, again with the whole one night stand turning into something even bigger…I really liked that aspect a lot. Again, the whole pregnancy romance trope isn’t my favorite, but Getting Played delivers where a romance book needs to. The trope wasn’t my cup of tea, but Emma Chase is a wonderful romance writer and any romance reader would enjoy this book!

Review: Mr. Mayfair by Louise Bay

Mr.Mayfair_Ebook.v2_BN.jpg
The Cover: I LOVE this cover! I look how it has a comic vibe and the colors are vivid and eye catching! So pretty!

Basics: Mr. Mayfair was released on October 1st 2019 and is 296 pages long. Genre wise Mr. Mayfair belongs to contemporary romance.

Description: It should be the most shocking news I’d ever gotten—My boyfriend is getting married. Okay, technically he’s my ex-boyfriend. Two months ago he decided he wanted a break. I still thought he was my happily ever after. On any other day, knowing he was gone for good would be the worst thing that could possibly happen. But not today. Because not only is my boyfriend getting married—his bride is my best friend. And they’ve sent me an invitation. There’s no way I’m going to attend.  I don’t care if it’s in beautiful Scotland.  Nothing and no one could convince me.

Not even when a deliciously handsome stranger tells me he needs to go as my plus one. Not even when he shoots me a wickedly, sexy smile. But then he offers me the opportunity of a lifetime—a dream come true. How can I say no? But I have one condition. He has to be my new boyfriend. I mean, my pretend new boyfriend. I’m about to find out that faking it can be a whole lot of fun.
1.jpg

Overall thoughts: Mr. Mayfaire by Louise Bay was a such a fun read! It actually reminded me a lot of The Wedding Date movie which was probably the reason why I loved it so much! Stella just found out her boyfriend is marrying her best friend out of the blue. From taking a break from each other to getting married out of the blue. YIKES was my first thought when I found that situation, poor Stella! To make matters worse, she even gets invited to the wedding! Stella isn’t even considering going until Beck gets involved. Beck has his own reasons for wanting to get invited to this wedding, Stella is his ticket in. He didn’t plan on falling for her, but the attraction between them grows more and more each. Both Beck and Stella wanted to go to the wedding for their own reasons, Beck for his ambition and Stella to show face that she is okay without her horrible ex-boyfriend. It’s a fake wedding date, until it isn’t.

Loved Mr. Mayfair! A great contemporary romance read with enough angst to make it even more spicer, great job Louise!

Review: Cocky Player by Stacey Lynn

CockeyPlayer-Amazon
The Cover: I love the colors and the model for Cocky Player, I just we could see more of the model’s face?

Basics: Cocky Player was released on September 24th 2019, book #4 in the Rough Riders series and is 282 pages long. Genre wise Cocky Player belongs to contemporary romance and sports romance.

Description: Like most guys I have a type— she wasn’t mine. Not at all.

The angelic beauty on the dance floor has innocence written all over her. But I can’t
stay away. And when she runs from me, leaving me wanting more, I can’t get her out of my head.

Turns out finding her won’t be too hard. My mystery virgin is the new marketing
assistant for the Rough Riders Football team. And the owner’s daughter.
She wants to lose her virginity and she’s come to me for one thing, and one thing
only. I’ll gladly help her out, but we have to be careful no one discovers us.
The last thing I need is for my boss to find out I’ve been teaching his baby girl all my dirtiest plays.
CP - AN IG.jpg

Overall thoughts: I was so EXCITED when Stacey Lynn announced she was writing another book for the Rough Rider series, yay! In real life I do not like football that much and I don’t enjoy it, however I am in love with sports romance books and the Rough Riders series by Stacey Lynn is one of my favorites!

Cocky Player focuses on Brenna and Connor: the daughter of the owner of the Rough Rider with a troubled past and Connor the running back for the Rough Riders. After finishing up college and coming back home, Brenna has decided to take matters into her own hands to lose her virginity and on her own terms. She didn’t think the man she would pick would be a star football player or her father’s employee.

Although resistant at first, Connor can’t stand away from Brenna and she can’t stay from him. Connor agrees to help her and both of them agree to just stay like this, nothing more. A strictly physical relationship, Connor teaching Brenna the ropes. As they spend more and more time together, the Raleigh Rough Riders finds himself growing more and more attracted to Brenna. She feels the same, but her past and his popularity threaten to tear them apart really before they could even begin.

I loved Cocky Player! It was a wonderful sports romance read and I love how heartfelt Brenna and Connor’s love story was! My only complaint was that I wish there was more written of their relationship as it got more and more established but other than another favorite book to add to my shelf!

Lies Kylie Scott.jpgExcerpt: “You’re going to break his heart.”

“No, I’m not,” I say. “That’s sort of the whole point. If I really thought leaving him would break his heart, then I probably wouldn’t be leaving him in the first place.”

My best friend, Jen, does not look convinced.

Boxes fill a good half of the room. What a mess. Who knew you could accumulate so much junk in only twelve months? At least we weren’t together so long that I can’t remember who owns what. One year is about the sweet spot for this issue in relationships, apparently.

“The fact of the matter is, we’re not in love. We have no business being engaged, let alone getting married.” I sigh. “Have you seen the packing tape?”

“No. He’s just such a nice guy.”

“I’m not debating that.” I climb to my feet, then head up the stairs to the second bedroom. Thom’s unofficial workout room/home office. Not a room I normally go into. But it only takes a bit of rummaging to find what I’m looking for. Whatever else might be said about them, insurance assessors are organized. The bottom drawer of Thom’s desk has a neat stash of stationery. I grab a couple rolls of thick tape.

“And leaving him this way…” Jen continues as I head back down.

“How many times have I told him we need to talk? He’s always putting it off, saying it’s not a good time. And now he’s away again. I’ve been messaging him for the last week and he barely replies.”

“You know he has to drop everything once a job comes up. I realize he’s not the most exciting guy, Betty, but—”

“I know.” I smack down a line of tape with extra zest, sealing the lid of the last box. In this Operation Abandon Ship Posthaste, I know I’m definitely slightly the bad guy. But not totally. Say sixty/forty. Or maybe seventy/thirty. It’s hard to tell to what degree. “I do know all of that. But he’s always busy with work or away on some business trip. What am I supposed to do?”

A sigh from Jen.

“When you realize you’ve made such a monumental mistake, it’s hard to sit and wait to fix things. Nor is it fair on either of us to keep up the pretense.”

“Guess so.”

“And the fact that he’s yet again made no effort to prioritize our relationship and make a little time for me in his busy schedule is just further proof that I’ve made the right choice in ending this now before it gets any more complicated. End of rant.”

Nothing from her.

“Anyway, you’re supposed to be on my side. Stop questioning me.”

“You wanted to get married and have children so badly.”

“Yeah.” I sit back on my heels. “I blame it all on playing with Ken and Barbie’s dreamhouse when I was little. But it turns out that being in a relationship with the wrong person can be even lonelier than being alone.”

Jen and I have been friends since sharing a room in college. We’ve witnessed the bulk of each other’s dating ups and downs. For some reason, I’m the type of girl who guys will go out with, but don’t tend to stick with. Apparently, I’m fuckable—just not girlfriend material. Maybe it’s my smart mouth. Maybe it’s the whole not fitting current societal expectations of beauty i.e. I’m fat. Maybe I was born under an unlucky star. I don’t know; it’s their loss. Like anyone, I have my faults, but all in all, I’m awesome. And I have a lot to give. Too often in the past few months, I’ve had to keep reminding myself of this fact.

“There are just so many jerks out there,” Jen says. “I was happy that you’d found a good one.”

“I think I’d prefer a jerk who was genuinely into me than a nice guy phoning it in.

Honestly, I’d rather go adopt a dozen cats and settle into old age and isolation than be with someone who treats me as if I’m an afterthought.”

She looks at me for a long moment, then nods slowly. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”

“Me too.”

“Time to start filling up the cars. Boy, do you owe me.”

I smile. “That I do.”

Jen stands and stretches before picking up one of the boxes labeled kitchen. “I just didn’t want you to do something you’d regret, you know?”

“I know. Thank you.”

Alone in the two-bedroom condo, everything is silent. My parting letter sits waiting on the coffee table with his name written on the front. A slight bulge in the envelope betrays the shape of my engagement ring. It’s a sweet, simple ring. One small diamond perched on a band of yellow gold. My hand feels wrong without it. Naked. They say there are different love languages and you have to take the time to learn your partner’s needs. It’s like he and I never quite got there. Or maybe I’m just crappy at relationships.

The bridal magazines I’d collected are in the trash. Perhaps I should have taken them into the florist shop where I work so someone could get some use out of them. But this feels more symbolic, more definite. My family are a couple of states away, and I have only a few of what I’d classify as good friends. Being an introvert makes it hard to meet people. A boyfriend, a husband, would mean I’m no longer alone. Someone cares about me and puts me first. At least part of the time. Only Thom doesn’t any of the time, so here we are.

I tighten my ponytail of long dark hair. Then, in a rare display of dexterity that my yoga instructor would be proud of, I stack three boxes in my arms and head outside into the hot afternoon sun. Jen’s Honda Civic is parked at the curb, the trunk standing open as she moves things about inside. My old Subaru sits in the driveway waiting to be filled. Birds are singing and insects chirping. It’s your typical mild autumn day in California.

That’s when the condo blows up behind me.

Review: Million Dollar Marriage by Katy Evans

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Evans comes a hot romance about two strangers and their race to fall in love. Million Dollar Marriage, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Katy Evans is LIVE!

COVER (1).jpg
The Cover: I ADORE the cover for Million Dollar Marriage! The color schedule, the gray background with the smoldering model staring at the reader…I love it all! Very dreamy and romantic, I can’t wait to grab it in paperback and put it on my bookshelf!

Basics: Million Dollar Marriage was released on July 23rd 2019, published Montlake Romance and is 272 pages long. Million Dollar Marriage genre wise belongs to contemporary romance.

Description: If someone had bet Nell a million dollars that she would be saying “I do” to a complete stranger on national television, she’d have called them crazy, but with her crushing student loan payments sending her deep into the red, she’s out of options. This should be nothing more than a business transaction—until she sets eyes on her groom, and everything changes.

The game is on the instant Luke spots Penelope “Nell” Carpenter. He’s out for the money, yes, but getting a little dirty with Nell doesn’t sound too bad either. Everyone knows he’s not the marrying kind, so it’s a good thing it’s just for show. God knows he’s the worst guy his pretty wife should pick for real.

They have nothing in common, but if they want the grand prize, they’ll have to beat out eight other couples. Proving that total opposites attract should be easy enough…as long as they don’t fall in love in the process.
2.jpg
Overall thoughts: Million Dollar Marriage is about Luke and Nell, two people who desperately need cash because of their bad financial situations. When you need something bad enough, people do crazy things….such as joining a reality show which is exactly what Nell and Luke do. They are complete opposites: Nell is the quiet, hardworking, no nonsense student while Luke is outgoing, loud, social extrovert. They join the show for money not to like one another or most of all, fall in love. Opposites attract as they say and that is exactly what happens between the two love birds. Apparently reality television isn’t all fake!

Million Dollar Marriage was funny, with added touches of romcom and contemporary romance to wrap it up into one great book! As an avid romance reader I really enjoyed the reality show plot and I always enjoy it when two characters who don’t like each other end up falling for each other. All in all, another great Katy Evans book to add to my growing collection and Million Dollar Marriage is a must read for any contemporary romance lover!

Release Blitz & Review: Just Love by Prescott Lane

Just Love, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Prescott Lane is LIVE!
Just Love Cover.jpeg

The Cover: Just Love‘s cover is so dreamy and gorgeous! I love the soft hues and just everything about this cover is very aesthetically pleasing.

Basics: Just Love by Prescott was released on June 9th 2019 and is a standalone contemporary romance.

Description: There’s two sides to every love story.  The how you fell in love, and the how you fell apart. This is ours. The cardinal rule of friendship is you don’t mess with your friend’s sister. That goes double when she’s his little sister. It was just supposed to be fun.

She wasn’t supposed to end up being the love of my life. And I definitely wasn’t supposed to break her heart. Ainsley is a wedding dress designer.  That should’ve been a warning that she’s a hopeless romantic.  That should’ve clued me in that she believes love conquers all.

But there are some things that love can’t fix.  I’m one of them. She thinks love is the answer. But love is the reason I let her go.

**A stand-alone, contemporary romance.**
Just Love - AN.jpg

Overall thoughts: Just Love by Prescott Lane was such a sweet, swoon worthy contemporary romance read! I love when contemporary romance books are put into not so ideal situations and man oh man the plot of Just Love was NOT an ideal situation, AT ALL. Which as a reader I LOVED because I love drama like that, for the characters? Not so much. Rhett has a crush on his best friend’s sister, his best friend’s YOUNGER sister and he has it bad. Ainsley fresh from college is trying to figure out the rest of the life and is a bit naive, she thinks love is the answer. As stated above in the description of the book, but ah we all should know better that love can’t fix everything. But it sure makes an interesting story for a romance book!

I don’t want to spoil any details, but I really enjoyed Just Love by Prescott Lane. Rhett and Ainsley have a great love story that I think any romance reader would devour and fall hard for. Pros of this book? I ADORED Rhett’s point of view, DEAR ROMANCE AUTHORS: more of your books need MALE point of views! I love Rhett in general, he has some typical annoying male issues (what male character doesn’t?) but I really enjoyed him. Ainsley is great too, I love how passionate and driven she is! Together again these two make one heck of a couple. The only con I had with Just Love is that sometimes I felt like the structure of some of the paragphs didn’t flow together very easily and made it a bit difficult for me to focus on the story and characters. But all in all, Just Love is a very solid contemporary romance book!

Review: Control Freak by Brianna Hale

CONTROL_FREAK_EBOOK
The Cover: I think the cover of Control Freak is gorgeous and sensual, it draws you in as a viewer and it is definitely one of the most steamiest romance covers I’ve ever seen.

Basics: Control Freak was released on June 27th 2019 and is 187 pages long. Genre wise Control Freak belongs to contemporary romance and age gap romance.

Description: Total control. I need it in every aspect of my life. Some would say that makes me an asshole. A freak. But as long as everything’s exactly how I want it, I’m completely flexible.  I’m kidding.  Okay, I’m not kidding.

Lacey needs someone in her life who’s bigger and scarier than her demons, and she wants that man to be me. Her boss. The Viking in a suit.I hope she understands what she’s getting into. This daddy isn’t going to pat her on the head and tell her she’s a good girl for nothing. Especially not when she’s spinning out of control.

**Author’s note: this book includes depictions of eating disorder recovery**
Control Freak.png

Overall thoughts: Control Freak is a classic Brianna Hale age gap romance book. One of my favorite tropes is age gap romance and Hale is very, very good at writing those romances. Control Freak is the story of Stian and Lacey, a museum director and college student who get paired up together when Stian’s assistant quits. Lacey just got out of rehab for an eating disorder and is trying to move past her difficulties with weight and food and onward to more school in the new couple of months. Please note, Control Freak does talk about an eating disorder, if that an issue for you please know that Brianna Hale writes about this in the most kind and informed way. She did a marvelous job and I truly applaud her for bringing this issue to light in this book.

The main struggle between Stian and Lacey is her eating disorder, however they still have to deal with the fact that she is his boss and she is his assistant; and again their age difference. Stian and Lacey’s desire for one another is scorching hot and you can’t help but root for them to be together in my opinion, they need one another.  I think that is one of the underlying tones of Control Freak is the fact that it is okay to ask for help and lean on someone else when you need it most. Control Freak is a romance book but it has beautiful and meaningful undertones to it that I think every reader would relate to and love reading about. A must summer read for 2019!

Review: Million Dollar Devil by Katy Evans

Evans-MillionDollarDevil-28091-CV-FT-V3.jpg
The Cover: I love the cover of Million Dollar Devil! The black and white with the hint of red works very well together and the cover model’s expression is very much what I imagined for James.

Basics: Million Dollar Devil was released on May 28th 2019, published by Montlake Romance and is 298 pages long. Genre wise Million Dollar Devil belongs to contemporary romance.

Description: Heir apparent to her father’s company, Lizzy Banks needs a man. The perfect man. But when the rich “fundbabies” she usually rubs shoulders with prove impossible to hire, she takes a chance on a raw beast of a man salvaged from the wreckage of a bar brawl.

James Rowan earns a modest income as a YouTube daredevil, but he can’t refuse Lizzy’s million dollar deal. As she polishes his rough edges, creating a sophisticated gentleman fit for the highest circles of society, not only does she bring out the perfect man—it’s like she’s making the man of her dreams. How can she resist?

Though Lizzy loves seeing James in his clothes—and out of them—he isn’t the kind of man you bring home to Daddy. Her father’s disapproval and the pressure of the campaign have her eyeing the straight and narrow, but Lizzy’s finding it awfully hard to resist the devil on her shoulder…
Blog tour-4

Overall thoughts: Oh my gosh! I loved this book so much! I have been in the WORST book slump ever and Million Dollar Devil just broke it! Katy Evans is one of my favorite romance writers and she just seriously hit this book out of the park. Million Dollar Devil is also available for FREE on Kindle Unlimited so grab for free while you can!

This book focuses on Lizzy and James, two different individuals and a man and woman who are completely different zones. Lizzy is the only child and daughter to  Mr. Banks, the owner to one of the biggest men’s fashion companies in the world. Lizzy is smart, beautiful, hard working and has tried everything impossible to please her Father, but since she’s female and working in a men’s fashion company, the odds are significantly stacked against her. When an opportunity comes for Lizzy to make her Father proud and take the reins of the company she jumps to do so, until she can’t find the perfect man for the new campaign she needs.

Enter James: the gorgeous and cocky Youtuber who doesn’t turn down any dare and will literally do anything for money. He’s a bit rough around the edges and lacks manners but Lizzy immediately gets the idea to turn James into the perfect model for her Father’s upcoming campaign. She doesn’t think about how attracted they are to one another or the fact that their different social standing could put everything she’s built with her Father and career at risk. Million Dollar Devil is a great story about a great couple falling for one another despite their social standings which I love this trope when it comes to romance books. What I also loved about Million Dollar Devil is the fact that Lizzy is such an amazing character and person; she basically has dedicated her entire life to her Father and his business (even going to freaking Stanford!) yet she STILL feels like she’s not enough for him. The things she goes through and how meeting and falling for James plays out, it really warmed my heart and is such a great message for anyone out there who gives it their all and still doesn’t feel like they are enough. Katy Evans has such great messages in all of her books but Million Dollar Devil‘s message will definitely stay with me for a long time. Million Dollar Devil is a MUST READ for any contemporary romance lover!

Dance With Me AMAZON.jpg
Blurb:
Starla. Just Starla. She doesn’t have a last name, and she doesn’t need one. Not with that many Grammys on her mantel. Everyone knows her kick-ass, no-holds-barred style of singing, dancing, and living. No one knows that America’s Sweetheart is still living with the wreckage of four years ago, when her world was torn apart. Losing her fiancé was devastating, but she’s channeled all of that into her music. Closing off her heart opened a hundred new doors.

Officer Levi Crawford, Seattle PD. For almost twenty years, Levi has been consumed by the law. He eats, sleeps, and breathes work. Not just because he’s a workaholic, but because he loves it. Sure, he doesn’t have time for a woman and barely sees the rest of his family, but it’s a trade he’s always been happy to make. Until Starla.

Two lonely hearts could learn to beat again, if they’re willing to dance together.

About the Author: Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.  Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.
