ARC Review: Filthy Gods by R. Scarlett

The Cover: This cover is EVERYTHING. It is seriously one of the best covers I have ever seen; it’s pleasing to the eye, the black and gold font is gorgeous and honestly I just love it.

Basics: Filthy Gods was released on May 15th, 2018 and is 168 pages long. Genre wise Filthy Gods belongs to novella, contemporary romance and standalone.

Description: Young. Wealthy. Elite. Attractive. The gentlemen’s secret society at Yale was filled with them. And Nathaniel Radcliffe, the bane of my existence, was one of them.

As the right hand of the American Gods, he was conceited and arrogant. A dangerously handsome man in a tailored custom suit and shiny black oxford loafers.

Filthy Gods.jpg Overall thoughts: Filthy Gods was my first R. Scarlett experience and oh my GOSH. I was completely blown away and R. Scarlett has one of the best romance books of 2018. Yes, I went there, I was THAT impressed. One of my favorite tropes when it comes to reading and especially in the romance world is the whole enemy to lovers to something more and Filthy Gods is basically centered around that trope, but delivers and then some.

Filthy Gods is actually a prequel novella and is a teaser for what the rest of the Filthy Gods series so it was really interesting to read. It talks about these four men who are basically Gods that rule this society. Juliette is just trying to keep her life together and her college career in tact. She may attending one of the best colleges in the world and holds one of the top GPAs but she’s not what she seems. Much to Juliette’s chagrin, Nathaniel (one of the members of the Gods) is pretty much hellbent on ruining her life. First it was in class, now in her social and work life. They strike up a deal between them for the summer and although they may seem like they absolutely hate one another, the chemistry they create is off the freaking charts.

Filthy Gods was sexy, well written, with heartfelt characters and intriguing plot that just made me gobble it down. I didn’t want to stop reading and when I finished I was very, very sad because I didn’t want it to end! R. Scarlett is an author to be on the lookout for because this book and the rest of this series has the possibility of burning down the whole romance genre book world. Look out world, here come the Filthy Gods.

Review: Pestilence The Four Horsemen by Laura Thalassa

The Cover: I was skimming through kindle unlimited when I saw this cover and it immediately caught my eye. This cover is beautiful and I absolutely LOVE how it shows Pestilence and Sara; not a lot of books do that or their covers don’t match their books and I am so happy that the cover of Pestilence does this. It will probably be one of my favorite covers of 2018, A+.

Basics: Pestilence was released on March 20th 2018 and is 383 pages long. Genre wise Pestilence belongs to fantasy, romance, new adult, science fiction and fantasy.

Description: They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.
And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she’ll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.
Overall thoughts: So when I found this book I was scrolling through the Kindle Unlimited section and I saw the cover and it immediately caught my eye. I am one of those people who are drawn to books by their cover, cliche and wrong I know but it’s how I’ve found some of the most wonderful books. I borrowed Pestilence from the Kindle Unlimited program and started to read. Honestly I had my doubts, it’s a fantasy book based on a woman falling in love with one of the four horsemen that are supposed to help end our world for crying out loud. But man…I was SO WRONG. Pestilence is one of the best romance, Mature YA, fantasy, new adult, science fiction and fantasy books of all year, if not of all time. Yes, I went there.

The world is ending and everyone is trying to find a way to stop it, which unfortunately means killing the being responsible for spreading the plague around the world. Sara Burns is a firefighter and just wants to help people in any way she can which leads her to staying behind to try and kill the Horseman as he travels into town. However when she tries to kill Pestilence, not everything goes to plan and Sara finds her a prisoner of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse instead. But is there more to this harbinger than meets the eye? Sara is hell bent on finding out, willinging to do whatever it takes to save mankind and her family.

Pestilence and Sara start off as a bit irritating to read about because of their situation but as the book continues you just can’t help but swoon and root for them and their slow burning relationship. Sara is smart, is definitely not a damsel and has a sass that could knock the socks off anyone who tries to cut her down. Pestilence is frustratingly gorgeous and otherworldly, but I really loved watching transform from this conqueror and bringer of plague/hater of humans into this person growing into something wonderful but questioning everything around him. In a sense being a human being because lord knows our emotions make us question everything. As a couple I love Pestilence and Sara together and their attraction sizzles off the page.

Laura Thalassa is an amazing writer, she is funny and just has this beautiful way of transporting you into her book so effortlessly. Pestilence was enthralling from start to finish and I am super excited for the future books in this series!

ARC Review: Bane by LJ Shen

BANE_AVAILABLE NOW The Cover: I really do not like this cover, at all. I don’t know why I don’t like it and honestly I’m disappointed that I don’t like it. The font and color are nice though, it’s not just my taste.

Basics: Bane was released on May 6th 2018 and is part of the Sinners of Saints series but can be read as a standalone. Genre wise Bane belongs to contemporary romance and standalone romance.

Description: Bane: Naked surfer. Habitual pothead. A con, a liar, a thief and a fraud.
Last I heard, he was extorting the rich and screwing their wives for a living.
Which is why I’m more than a little surprised to find him at my threshold, looking for my friendship, my services, and most puzzling of all—looking humbled.
Thing is, I’m on a boycott. Literally—I cut boys from my life. Permanently.
Problem is, Bane is not a boy, he is all man, and I’m falling, crashing, drowning in his sweet, perfect lies.

Jesse Carter: Hot as hell, cold as ice.
I wasn’t aware of her existence until a fat, juicy deal landed in my lap.She’s a part of it, a little plaything to kill some time. She is collateral, a means to an end, and a side-bonus for striking a deal with her oil tycoon stepdad.
More than anything, Jesse Carter is a tough nut to crack.

1I'm not afraid Overall thoughts: Bane was an emotional, heart-wrenching, up and down, curvy rollercoaster. It was downright hard to read sometimes and throughout most of the book, I’m a very empathic person and my heart just went out to Jesse for everything she went through. LJ Shen certainly loves to lure her readers in and rip our hearts out suddenly with her books. Bane was the worst and best one yet in that sense because the curveballs Shen kept throwing had my eyes bugging out of my head in confusion and shock.

Jesse has had some of the most traumatic things done to her and she’s just trying to heal from her past, she has her way of doing things and doesn’t want to change any of that. Bane ever the businessman and scoundrel (I call him scoundrel lovingly by the way) is the perfect man to shake up Jesse’s world. When he is given an opportunity to further his business and a young woman, he doesn’t think twice. Besides Jesse and Bane have more in common than you think, in several different ways. Again, Shen loves torturing her readers.

I enjoyed Bane, I didn’t think it would be such the angsty, roller coaster ride that it was but I liked it. It wasn’t my favorite read mainly the fact that A LOT of traumatic things are discussed in the book and I would of appreciated a warning at the beginning of the book to prepare me for what I was about to read, but besides that Bane is without a doubt LJ Shen’s best book yet. If you can handle some dramatic and angsty romance, Bane is the pick for you.

The Cover: I love ALL the covers that are part of the A Court Of Thorns & Roses series but the cover of A Court Of Frost & Starlight is so BEAUTIFUL. It’s probably my favorite to be honest! Feyre looks AMAZING and all the little details on the cover just makes me want to hug it! So pretty! A+

Basics: A Court Of Frost & Starlight was released on May 1st 2018, published by Bloomsbury YA and is 272 pages. A Court Of Frost & Starlight is a novella focusing on the events that occurred after A Court Of Wings & Ruin (book #3 in the series.) Genre wise A Court Of Frost & Starlight belong to Fantasy, Mature Young Adult, Standalone/novella and Romance.

Description: A companion tale to Sarah J. Maas’s #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series that takes place several months after the explosive events of A Court of Wings and Ruin Narrated by Feyre and Rhysand, this story bridges the events in A Court of Wings and Ruin and the upcoming novels in the series. A Court Of Frost & Starlight.jpg Overall thoughts: I loved A Court Of Frost & Starlight so much! I wish it had been a full length book to be honest, but it was perfect as novella. It wrapped up some questions that were left behind in A Court Of Wings and Ruin and also got me curious for the next book! Feyre and Rhysand are everything and I could probably read ten or five million more books based on them alone. Besides the growing tensions in other courts and the aftermath of the war with Hybern, it was refreshing to just read about the lives of the Night Court. Feyre and Rhys could just be together and it was a nice change of pace.

I also liked the fact that several chapters were based on other character’s points of view. Although when it came to reading other character’s POV it brought more questions which was a bit annoying, but it set things up for the next book. Which brings me up to the next part of this review: Nesta and Cassian. Man…these two are probably the most angsty couple I have ever read about and they really aren’t a couple yet! No spoilers, but the majority of this book focused on how every character was dealing with the aftermath of the war and all the changes that occurred. It was very hard to read Nesta’s POV, my heart goes out to her and also to Cassian. They are both broken people that I just wished would come together so they could finally heal and be happy, maybe in the next set of books? Which brings up another big question, Sarah J. Maas said that it would be pretty clear what characters the next set of books would focus on when it came A Court Of Frost & Starlight; but she had several characters point of views in A Court Of Frost & Starlight. minus Feyre and Rhysand it seemed to me that the next set of books would focus on the Inner circle which could mean: Nesta, Cassian, Elain, Lucien, Mor and Amren. Question is, will the next book focus on one POV or two? Or even more than two? I’m excited for the future but I wished we didn’t have to wait so long!

A Court Of Frost & Starlight was a light, happy read showcasing the aftermath events of A Court Of Frost & Starlight. Clearly not everyone was happy but if all the characters weren’t happy, more books wouldn’t be published. I really liked the back and forth of POV’s between Feyre and Rhysand, I actually wish we could get the whole entire series from Rhy’s point of view. I also really enjoyed how their was more of a romance element in A Court Of Frost & Starlight too, after everything Feyre and Rhys have been through they NEEDED some happy in the lives desperately.

I am so looking forward to the future of this series and the expansion beyond the Night Court. A Court Of Frost & Starlight will definitely be high on my list of best 2018 books at the end of the year. Till next time Court lovers: to the stars who listen and to the dreams that are answered!
